Consisting of materials documenting Workman's career as newspaper reporter and editor, chiefly with the Charleston News and Courier, 1946-1962, and The State newspaper of Columbia, 1963-1979, and as an author and biographer of state senator Edgar Brown. These files include research materials, 1946-1979, re politics, race relations, civil rights, and economic development in South Carolina. Also includes records of Workman's education at The Citadel, and his wife Rhea Thomas Workman's education at Winthrop College; materials re her parents' courtship, military training of her father, Heber Thomas, and his service in the American Expeditionary Force, 1918; Workman's military records as an intelligence officer during World War II and post-war reserve officer; and records relating to Workman's founding of the Trenholm Road Methodist Church in Columbia. Contains campaign files documenting Workman's unsuccessful 1962 race opposing incumbent U.S. Senator Olin D. Johnston, but also documenting Workman's contributions toward the creation of a viable Republican Party in South Carolina. Other campaign files document his unsuccessful 1982 race for governor against incumbent Richard W. Riley.
